Joel Osteen, the famous televangelist, once said, “We can be civil. We can still be friends and be Democrats and Republicans, and have different views.” Some naïve individuals still believe this today. I do believe it’s important to be civil to everyone and perhaps be friendly with acquaintances of the opposite political persuasion, but the left has perpetrated evil in our society for generations. Calling them friends and overlooking the evil they promote will only bring more of it, as can clearly be seen by the slurs of “racism” hurled at conservatives currently by the President and his party, as well as the leftist media, social media, academia, and Hollywood. Investigating history can often clarify an issue, so let’s take a look at the history of the Democrat party. (Note: I never use the adjective “democratic” when referring to the Democrat party because it is not their label. They are Democrats and members of the other party are Republicans. In addition, the Democrat party is anything but democratic.)
Andrew Jackson and the Trail of Tears
Andrew Jackson was our seventh president and the first Democrat president. During his term, he signed The Indian Removal Act which expelled many tribes of Native Americans from their land at gunpoint and led to over 5000 dying while on a forced march to Indian Territory more than 1200 miles west of the Mississippi River. This became known as The Trail of Tears. Native Americans were ill-prepared for the trip and died from exposure, diseases like typhus and cholera, and starvation. Does this sound like a party that cared for minorities as they claim today?
The Civil War & Slavery
During the Civil War, it was Democrats in the South who seceded from the United States. Although the Civil War was complex and many in the South –even today–claim the South seceded over states’ rights issues, it is clear that wealthy Democrats in the Confederate states were insistent on keeping the institution of slavery for economic reasons. After all, an affluent farmer growing cotton could realize a tidy profit because he didn’t have to pay for labor.
It was President Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, who issued the Emancipation Proclamation freeing the slaves part way through the Civil War. However, it took another two years of fighting to end the practice of slavery in the South. Afterwards, a Democrat, John Wilkes Booth, assassinated President Lincoln, and Lincoln’s Vice President, Andrew Johnson (a Democrat) became president. Johnson is considered by many to be the most racist president we’ve had in the White House. He vetoed a civil rights bill designed to protect African Americans and urged Southern states not to ratify the 14th amendment granting them citizenship. In fact, Johnson’s leniency toward former Confederates allowed many of them to become government officials in the South, and soon they enacted Black Codes limiting freedoms for former slaves. Can anyone say racist?
The KKK
Democrat Nathan Bedford Forrest was a Confederate Army general during the Civil War. And, although he did not create the Ku Klux Klan, having joined it two years after its inception, he helped organize it and was its first Grand Wizard. According to History.com, “For its part, the Ku Klux Klan dedicated itself to an underground campaign of violence against Republican leaders and voters (both black and white) in an effort to reverse the policies of Radical Reconstruction and restore white supremacy in the South.” So, white supremacy in the United States was sought by and brought to us by Democrats, not Republicans. Instead Republicans were the ones who passed the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the Constitution, effectively abolishing slavery, giving citizenship to all people born in the US, and giving black Americans the right to vote. Didn’t learn that in history class, did you?
Woodrow Wilson, Eugenics, & Birth of a Nation
Stepping into the 20th Century, let’s begin by examining President Woodrow Wilson. Wilson was a Democrat, a eugenicist, and a racist. Eugenicists believed it was important to breed a race of white, thoroughbred people, and through forced sterilization and abortion, prevent people of color, the poor, and the “feeble-minded” from procreating. Wilson also hosted the first movie ever shown at the White House. The movie, Birth of a Nation–originally titled The Clansmen–portrayed the KKK as an heroic enterprise.
Here is a short video of Dinesh D’Souza interviewing Dr. Carol Swain, retired professor of political science and law at Vanderbilt University, analyst, and author, about this event.
One has to wonder if the KKK could have been relegated to the ash heap of history sooner had it not been for the implicit White House approval of its activities via the airing of this vile movie. It seems the party constantly lobbing the invective of “racist” at anyone who disagrees with their views, definitely has a lot to answer for.
Hitler and the American Eugenics Movement
Democrats’ racist tendencies once again erupted; this time in the early part of the 20th century. During his imprisonment for his failed coup attempt known as The Beer Hall Putsch, Adolf Hitler read books by several American eugenicists, whose aim was to create a pure-bred race of white people. Nearly all were part of the progressive movement and believers in Social Darwinism–the view that qualities like productivity and the ability to accrue riches were inherited by the fit, while laziness and stupidity were passed down from generation to generation by the unfit. Social Darwinism, at its essence, was about “survival of the fittest.” This ideology and the eugenics movement influenced Hitler’s book Mein Kampf and his determination to create a master race, all the while eliminating over six million Jews and four million of those he deemed unfit, like Roma and those with physical and mental defects. Does this seem like a party that valued people of color and the poor? Or, instead, was it (and I would argue still is) a party that only pretended to care for this sector of our nation? More examples will help us answer these questions.
FDR and the USS St. Louis
No discussion of the 20th Century would be complete without mentioning Democrat President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. In 1939, a mere 3.5 months prior to Hitler’s invasion of Poland, Roosevelt had the ability to grant asylum to 937 Jews who fled Germany on the USS St. Louis. Yet he did nothing, and the ship was forced to return to Europe where 254 of its passengers perished in the Holocaust. Roosevelt was also the president who signed a proclamation which led to the full-scale internment of Japanese-Americans during the war years. Is this truly the party of minorities and the little people or were these clear examples of racism?
Democrats and Segregation
Democrats were also instrumental in the segregation policies of the South. One cannot forget four-time Democrat governor of Alabama, George Wallace, leading the fight against the US government policy of integration. Likewise, Democrat Arkansas governor Orville Faubus refused to integrate white schools in his state. It was Republican President Dwight Eisenhower who declared integration the law of the land and sent US troops to Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas to disperse an unruly mob of segregationists preventing black students from entering the school. Did you ever learn these facts in school? If you’re my age (65), you may have been taught a lot of this. If you’re in your fifties and younger, you probably have no knowledge of these historical incidents. Do you know why? Let’s examine what liberal scholars did.
Democrat Academics Create a Myth About Republicans
After the 1950s, liberal academics and journalists created a myth claiming the Democrat party and Republican party suddenly switched places. Republicans suddenly woke up one day and became racists, while Democrats threw off their white sheets and became the tolerant party. This liberal myth was called the Southern Strategy. In essence, professors and the media claimed Republicans couldn’t win in the South and wouldn’t win a general election unless they appealed to racists.
However, this doesn’t make sense given the historical facts. Eisenhower, a Republican, won Tennessee, Florida, Virginia, Louisiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia in 1956 AFTER he supported the Supreme Court decision in Brown vs. the Board of Education. The decision found segregation of schools and the policy of “separate but equal” facilities to be unconstitutional and paved the way for the integration of public schools. Facts are a stubborn thing, aren’t they?
Another myth promulgated by leftist academics claims that racist Southern Democrats were angry with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, so they switched parties and became Republicans. The fact is that of the 21 Democrat senators who opposed the Civil Rights Act, only one became a Republican. The 20 seats remained Democrat for over two decades. In addition, Republican President Richard Nixon, who was credited by deceitful academics and journalists with creating the Southern Strategy, lost the South in 1968, but Democrat Jimmy Carter won it handily in 1976. And, in 1992, Democrat Bill Clinton won the South and the presidency. How did that happen if Republicans were using the Southern Strategy and appealing to those with racist leanings? Many history textbooks are filled with these blatant lies. Don’t believe them.
Today, the word racist is often launched at Republicans by Democrats to shut down any debate. As discussed previously, it has been the Democrat party that enslaved African Americans, fought a war to keep them enslaved, afterwards began the KKK to torment them, and eventually denied them civil rights. However, the left, which dominates academia and the media uses Nazi Josef Goebbels’ propaganda strategy with abandon. In Goebbels’ famous words: “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.”
President Lyndon Baines Johnson Was a Shameless Racist
Here is a case in point. Textbooks espouse the notion that Democrat President Lyndon Baines Johnson was a hero to blacks because he fought for their civil rights. I implore you to watch the video below where Professor William H. Chafe, professor of history at Duke University, sheds light on Johnson’s true nature.
Let that sink in for a moment. Johnson voted against the anti-lynching bill. He voted against the abolition of the poll tax, a fee African Americans had to pay if they wanted to vote. And, most disturbing is the way he belittled his driver by referring to him as the “N” word his whole life and telling him to get used to it. Hero to blacks? Valiant warrior for civil rights? No, he was truly a racist in word and deed.
Robert Byrd: Democrat, Senator, Friend of the Clintons & Racist
It’s time to discuss another infamous Democrat, Robert Byrd. He was the longest serving senator in the history of Congress, but prior to that he joined the KKK and rose to the title of Kleagle and Exalted Cyclops of his local chapter. Then, as a congressman in the 60s, he called Martin Luther King, Jr. “a self-seeking rabble rouser” and actively opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. After his position became unpopular, he made an about face…or did he? Here he is in a 2009 Fox News interview with the late Tony Snow. (*You must watch this on YouTube because Byrd uses racist language.)
Can you believe he said that on national television? As reprehensible as the late senator was, what of those who supported him? Both Bill and Hillary Clinton, at one time, have claimed Byrd as a mentor. Listen to Bill eulogizing him at his funeral.
Fleeting association? Byrd was in the KKK long enough to become the Exalted Cyclops of the nefarious organization. Moreover, Bill Clinton is willing to excuse this alliance where Robert Byrd was its local leader because he was dirt poor and just trying to get elected. Do you think Democrats would ever give a Republican a break for being a part of a racist organization for nearly ten years? Of course that would never happen. For starters, no matter what the lying media tells you, it’s not Republicans who are racists.
Joe Biden, Racist in Chief
This “rogues gallery” of Democrat racists wouldn’t be complete without a hat tip to Dementia Joe. That would be our current President, Joe Biden. In a 2015 speech, Biden discussed the problems soldiers faced regarding banking issues and loans. In the speech, he referred to the bankers as “shylocks”. This term is an extremely anti-Semitic remark. The origin of the word dates back to Shakespeare’s play The Merchant of Venice where a character named Shylock was a Jewish money lender. Today shylock means a ruthless, greedy banker or loan shark, but the term still offends Jewish people. Biden eventually apologized for his remarks.
In another incident, old Joe insulted Indian Americans.
Biden actually thinks his remarks are funny. Nothing funny about racism, Joe.
Interestingly, Obama picked this guy as his vice president despite this comment from Biden.
Wow! What can one say about that? In Joe’s view, most African Americans are NOT articulate, clean, bright, and good looking. Once again, imagine what the reaction would have been had a Republican uttered those words. Yet despite Biden’s history of making racist remarks, he has made a career out of calling Republicans white supremacists and racists. Recall this doozy. (*Hard to understand why you can’t watch this video here, except perhaps YouTube Dems don’t want you to recall Biden’s words.)
Biden’s Racist, Cynical Immigration Scheme
That brings us to today. Over the last 21 months since he’s taken office, Joe Biden–through his cynical scheme to overturn everything Trump and usher in a one-party political system–has allowed over two million illegal aliens to enter our country. Southern border towns do not have the resources to deal with these numbers, and their taxpayers are footing the bill to house and feed these people. In Texas alone, taxpayers have spent four billion dollars dealing with the horde of humanity that is crushing the resources of their communities. President Biden and his Democrat cronies don’t care. They are getting what they want: cheap labor and an influx of future Democrat voters (at least they believe they will be Democrats) that will keep the Democrat party in power for decades to come. Keep in mind that none of these border states are sanctuary states like California, Massachusetts, New York, and Illinois.
Republican Governors Fight Back…Finally
So, in a brilliant maneuver, Governors Greg Abbott of Texas and Ron DeSantis of Florida are turning the tables on Democrats, forcing them to learn to live with their policies and forcing the media to cover the border crisis. Abbott began transporting illegal immigrants to New York City, Chicago, and Washington, DC. After all, the mayors of these cities have signaled their virtue regarding how compassionate and welcoming they are toward these people, even touting their locales as sanctuary cities. Thus far, Abbott has bused nearly 9000 illegals to NYC and DC in the past several months, and more recently has sent 64 busloads of illegals to Chicago. What is fascinating is that these leftist, virtue signaling, sanctuary mayors are screaming bloody murder. These are huge cities with millions of people, and they certainly have more resources to deal with the staggering number of illegal aliens crossing our border than small towns like El Paso, Texas.
Ron DeSantis Exposes Elite Liberals For the Racists They Truly Are
Finally, let’s savor the magnificence of Governor Ron DeSantis. He flew 48 illegal migrants to the lily white, super wealthy enclave of Martha’s Vineyard off the coast of Massachusetts, which coincidentally is the location where Barack Obama has a mansion with seven rooms and eight bathrooms on 29 acres. Since it’s not peak season currently, and the Obamas are not there, the former first couple could certainly have housed some of these folks for a while until they could find other accommodations. Additionally, although I have never visited Martha’s Vineyard, I did a little research using Booking.com and discovered that the tiny resort community has over 100 hotels, inns, and B&Bs. Surely, the illegal immigrants could have been sheltered at one of these locations. However, a spokeswoman for the island had this to say.
Did you get that, friends? They have a housing crisis on the island. That’s rich considering they managed to find rooms for 250 journalists who traveled to the ritzy venue to report on the story (which is even richer considering the fact that there has only been one–that’s right ONE–journalist reporting daily from the southern border. His name is Bill Melugin of Fox News). The truth is that most of the residents of Martha’s Vineyard seemingly only want people of diversity on the island if they are waiting tables or gardening, certainly not living next door to them. So, less than 48 hours after the illegals arrived at Martha’s Vineyard, 150 Massachusetts National Guard members were called in to remove them to a Cape Cod military base. If this doesn’t smack of racism, I don’t know what does.
A Final Word
I believe it is infinitely clear that it’s not Republicans who are the party of white supremacists and racists. That infamy goes to Democrats of the past and the present. Oh, they camouflage themselves well by virtue signaling, deflecting, and projecting their racist views on conservatives, but they are the true party of racism. So, I end where I began. We can be civil to Democrats and possibly friendly. We can even pray for them. Jesus calls us to do so. However, true friends? Unfortunately, the answer to that question is a resounding no. Until the Democrat party acknowledges their past and calls out their leaders in Congress and the President for their hostile, evil rhetoric intended to inflame a backlash against Republicans, we must hold firm. I Thessalonians 5:22 beseeches us to “reject every kind of evil,” and Proverbs 14:16 reminds us that “the wise fear the Lord and shun evil…” Let’s do just that.
Excellent article. I hope that you are writing a book. You said so many of the things that I believe. Keep writing.
I like the point you made of not calling the Democrat Party, democratic, for the reasons that you stated, first, that is how they label themselves and second, that, truly, they are not democratic! Good job, Rita.
